Winemaker Notes

2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009

2006 Contrarian
68% Roussanne, 32% Viognier

The grapes were destemmed and then skin soaked for 24 hours. Pressed in two ton basket presses directly into barrel, the wine undergoes 100% malolactic conversion and is stirred on lees in 100% neutral oak casks. Blended two months prior to bottling, I think you will find this wine is ready to consume now or you can lay it down for a couple years.

2006 Problem Child
77% Zinfandel, 12% Syrah, 11% Mourvedre

Everyone knows one, has one, or is one. If you have been following this wine over the years, you may notice that the 2006 has a slightly higher amount of Zinfandel than years past. Do not be alarmed! The wine is every bit a Problem Child. Bursting with flavor and zing, 2006 co-mingles with 40% new American oak to bring you a wine that persists in mind like any stubborn Problem Child would.

These vines were planted in 1973 on the Westside of Paso Robles. The Zinfandel vines are dry-farmed, head-pruned and interplanted with Alicante. The wine is full bodied, robust and possesses a bright fruit and acid notes.

2006 Outsider
75% Zinfandel, 21% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre

The fruit for the Outsider comes from Northern facing slopes and some lower lying areas where the soil is deeper and the temperatures are cooler. These factors produce less acid in the grape; these wines gain an edge of spice and earth.

2006 Cherry Red
64% Zinfandel, 18% Mourvedre, 18% Syrah

This tiny vineyard produces some of my most memorable memories. Yielding between ½ to 1 ton per acre, these grapes pack the concentrated flavors of cherries, raspberries, blueberries, and the liqueurs that inherently follow. Being a blendster I throw in a bit of Mourvedre and Syrah to round out the flavor profile. Drink now through 2015.

2006 Sticks & Stones
65% Grenache, 24% Mourvedre, 11% Syrah

The first thing you will notice about this wine is the extremely fragrant bouquet of violets followed by explosive aromas of fresh raspberries. The wine possesses both a fruity edge and a wild, gamey mid-palate. The natural acidity keeps this wine alive in the mouth and an abundance of both grape and barrel tannin allow this wine to linger on your senses. This wine is still very young and should age for 5-8 years.

2006 Rising Tides
44% Grenache, 42% Syrah, 14% Mourvedre

Close to equal parts Grenache and Syrah with a splash of Mourvedre. This wine is florally aromatic with bursts of boysenberry, tar and coffee. Aged in French and Hungarian barrels. The wine drinks beautifully now and should age gracefully for the next 4-7 years.

2006 Nemesis
82% Syrah, 14% Mourvèdre, 4% Grenache

Appropriately tight for those who prefer more ageability. This wine’s lush and creamy mouthfeel is packed with flavors of blueberry, boysenberry, smoke and tar as well as subtle hints of oak and vanilla bean. If you decide to drink this wine now, it will benefit tremendously from an hour in a decanter. Drink now through 2013.

2006 Slacker
67% Syrah, 18% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre

Fine lines of tannin and flavors of fresh fruit, cedar and grilled meats co-mingle with an attitude of confidence and self-assurance. Aged in neutral oak casks, this wine has a purity in its youthfulness while maintaining the ability to age gracefully. Drink now through 2014.
